My Exciting Zhush Win

With all the excitment of the wedding I havnt had a chance to share my good bit of news from last week. I only went & won myself this rather gorgeous piece of artwork from over on thezhush. How exciting is that, what a lucky girl I am. Isnt it gorgeous? As I have blabbed on far to much already I move next month so my little head is spinning with ideas about where this rather lovely piece of artwork will be homed. Lounge, dinning room or bedroom? Its a great basis for a new makeover. This painting is by Erica eriksdotter & if you fancy getting your hands on a copy why not hop over to her page to take a closer look at her work, she has some beautiful pieces.

Well the count down is over & I among billions of others across the globe tunned in to watch the nuptials of William & Kate & how absolutely breath taking did she look, she makes an incredibly beautiful bride & the perfect princess. I do like a fairy tale ending & I cant wait for the pitter patter of tiny royal feet.
Ok so its a very short & sweet post from me today as I'm off out for dinner to celebrate the wedding. I may even have a sneaky glass of rose (naughty girl). Well in the meantime I will leave you with these pretty wedding inspiration images bye for now x

1. Where did it all begin for you with Bridal Designs Wedding Jewellery & how long has the business been running?
I was working part time in a jewellery shop when I started looking more closely at how the pieces were put together, I decided to look into making jewellery myself and after a lot of reading books and hours spent on the internet I made a start. There was a lot of trial and error involved to start with but eventually I started getting results I was pleased with. My sister saw some pieces I’d made and asked me if I’d make her wedding jewellery for her. I made a few different sets for her to try which left me with quite a lot of excess jewellery, I plucked up courage to approach a couple of local bridal shops to see if they’d be interested in stocking my jewellery and to my delight both said yes! After a year of supplying the shops I decided to start up my website This was in 2005 and it has been going from strength to strength ever since.

2.  Tell us a bit about your new ‘loves me’ range
Remember when you were a kid and the only way to tell whether your first love felt the same about you was by picking the petals off a daisy? Well that’s the idea behind our new collection… Loves Me! It consists of daisy shaped flowers made from Swarovski pearls and crystals with single drop beads representing the falling petals…he loves me..he loves me not….he Loves Me!  The pieces are so delicate they would be perfect for any member of the bridal party from the Bride to the smallest flowergirl.

 3. Where can people purchase your jewellery pieces
You can buy direct from my website at http://www.bridaldesignsweddingjewellery.co.uk/ . My designs are also stocked by bridal shops in Devon and Sheffield, just contact me for details on info@bridaldesignsweddingjewellery.co.uk

4. If you were designing a jewellery piece for Kate Middleton what ideas would you put forward for her?
With a Grandmother-in-law to be with such an extensive collection of diamonds to borrow I dont think she will be in need of too much jewellery! However I think something like the Zoe necklace and bracelet would be perfect for those 'afternoon tea with the Queen' occasions, classic pearls but with a touch of sparkle.

5. Do you design pieces for yourself & what would be your perfect jewellery piece & why?
I don't design specifically for myself but am usually wearing my current favourite piece (which changes daily!) Today i am wearing the Moonlight bracelet which is so easy to wear but is really eyecatching. My perfect jewellery piece is my engagement ring, it is so far removed from my usual style but I love it, it's an antique Victorian gold, ruby and diamond ring from 1898

6. Is there anything else about Bridal Designs Wedding Jewellery you would like to share with us?
I'd like to introduce you to my loyal staff members, they are completely useless at designing jewellery and making tea but I often get inspiration for new pieces whilst out waking with them (including the Loves Me! collection while walking through a field covered in daisies) .They are Rosie and Misty the Bridal Designs dogs.

Wedding Styling

After the interview yesterday with the very lovely Heidi the wedding planner from anaffairtorememberevents, I thought I would continue today by sharing these bridal inspirational pictures from Style me Pretty.

style me pretty http://smp.gd/b/b5z bridal inspirations
There is so much that goes into planning a wedding & I have such an interest in event styling with table scaping & the use of chair coverings. I have a friend who hires wedding chair covers & I have featured her here before, you can click the add at the right hand side of the page to take you to her website http://www.katieschaircovers.co.uk/   To be involved in such an important event must be such a buzz.  I start a florist course next month & I want to specialise in wedding floristry as I have mentioned before.

Well only 2 more days now & counting until the mother of all weddings arrives. Tomorrow I have another interview to share with you from Tracey Phillips of Bridal Designs jewellery.  See you tomorrow x

An Affair To Remember

Today the very lovely Heidi from wedding planning & events company  an affair to remember  has been kind enough to spare me some of her time for an interview as we kick start the count down to the royal wedding on friday.
 1. how did you get into wedding planning & how long have you been doing it? I started off planning events for non-profit organisations when I was at university in 2007.  I worked for both Planned Parenthood and the American Red Cross for some time.  I then came across a job as an assistant to a wedding planner and thought I’d give it a try.  Needless to say, I fell in love with it and began fully immersing myself in the world of weddings.  At the same time as working as a wedding planning assistant, I worked in a 4* restaurant working on large parties.  Of course the experience as an assistant was helpful, but I found working within the food/service industry truly prepared me for dealing with the logistics of events on a large scale.  I moved to the UK in October 2009 and did nothing but research the wedding market here for a period of time.  I then launched my business and I find myself learning and studying each and every day in order to improve my skills and knowledge.

2. what does a wedding planner do? A wedding planner can do as little or as much as you require in order to assist in the orderly planning and running of your wedding.  Wedding planners can help with budgets, finding the right suppliers, wedding dress/suit shopping, searching for the right venue, helping you to create a theme/colour scheme, and faciliting all of your suppliers on the day.  As a wedding planner, I find myself filling the role of friend, confidant, therapist, personal assistant, guide and the overall go-to person for everything wedding related.
3. What gives you inspiration for your events?
Initially, I derive my inspiration from the couples and what their interests are.   I love personalising weddings and I find this is one of the best ways to do it.  I also derive a lot of inspiration from blogs such as Rock n Roll Bride and from world-class designers such as Preston Bailey

4. What is your speciality?
I specialise in working with couples who want something different.  So many couples have cookie-cutter weddings because they don’t know anything else is possible.  I love bringing unique ideas to the table and showing couples that their wedding can truly reflect who they are.  I am a big fan of breaking the rules and thinking outside the box.  I also, love to work with same-sex civil unions.

5. Can anyone use a wedding planner? people generally expect that wedding planners are expensive but planning a wedding on your own can be incredibly stressful?Yes, the notion that wedding planners are always expensive is a total myth-planners are not just for those who have a fortune to spend on their wedding!  Many couples find that they actually save money using wedding planners because they can negotiate discounts with suppliers.  Most couples are having their first wedding so they don’t know what things should cost; a wedding planner can be your guide and advise you if you are spending too much or too little on any particular facet of your wedding. Wedding planners are also pros at keeping you on budget-something that most all couples get a bit lax with.  I have found that the money and time saved by hiring a wedding planner more than pays for itself.

6. How important is it to style an event with table scaping, chair covers & flowers?
I think table-scaping, chair covers, and flowers all play an important part in the design of the event.  That being said, there are always alternatives to the mainstream ways of styling these elements.  Below are photos of a button bouquet made by a supplier that I work with and alternative chair covers.

7. Do people generally have ideas of what they want themselves or do they need a lot of inspiration from you?I have found that people do have some ideas but mainly about what they don’t want, which is a good starting place.  Couples tend to derive their ideas for their wedding from what they have seen and don’t realise that they are not limited to that.  I love opening their eyes to the possibilities that exist.

8. Are people quite scared to try theme weddings, are they stuck with the traditional out look or are they quite brave with your ideas?I find that at first people recoil at the word “theme” but a theme doesn’t have to be cheesy at all.  Once I get enough information about the couple and their interests I can suggest a theme that they love.  This way they aren’t planning just another wedding in the eyes of their guests-they are planning a unique wedding that reflects who they are.

9. If you were the wedding planner for William & Kate & you could chose any theme for theme what would it be & why. This is a really tough question to answer without knowing them on a personal level.  What I would do is sit down with them and go through a list of questions that give me insight on what both of their interests are and if they have any hobbies that they share.  I would then take their favourite colours, flowers, activities, etc and tie them together into a personalised theme that is truly all their own.  I don’t think the Queen would appreciate anything but a Royal-themed wedding, but that is just the way I work!
10. What's the one most important thing that wedding planners have that brides themselves do not have?
Contacts! We deal with wedding suppliers on a regular basis so we know who the best of the best are and who will suit your personal style best.  I am a part of the 100 Top Wedding Tweeters List, which just goes to show how much contact I have with suppliers.  I also have the experience that brides often do not, considering most have not married before.  We can advise on all of the little things that often get forgotten but are so important.  For example, I am finding luxury toilets for a barn wedding at the moment-not the most glamourous bit of the job but it is an essential part of the wedding that most brides would overlook.

11. Who should contact you?

If you want your wedding to reflect the personalities of you and your partner, then you should contact me.  If you want your wedding to be an experience as opposed to just a party with a meal, you should get in touch with me.  If you want your guests to be talking about your wedding for months, even years to come, then I am the planner for you!

12. How can couples get in touch with you for a free consultation?
My website is http://www.anaffairtorememberevents.co.uk/ and I can be reached by email at heidi@anaffairtorememberevents.co.uk or by phone at 07985684208.  Don’t hesitate to call or email me in the evenings or over the weekend-I know you are busy!

Thank you so much for sharing this with us Heidi xx

Lets get the party started!

So we have barely finished unwrapping our Easter Eggs & already we are thinking of the next bank holiday in 4 days time for the royal wedding. I do love a fairy tale wedding especially one that gives us the fairy tale ending with a princess. I can remember the wedding of the late Princess Diana & prince Charles (ok I was only 5 at the time) but I can remember having a street party & everyone being in the spirit of things. Somehow there doesnt seem quite the excitement this time around, maybe it because I am all grown up & fairy tales & princesses arent so compelling but seriously people its a royal wedding of our future King surely we should all be a little more excited! Well I am going to kick off some celebrations here on my blog this week with everything wedding themed with a couple of exciting interviews lined up with a wedding planner & a bridal jewellery designer. So ice the champagne girls its time to celebrate princess style.

Happy Easter to you all I hope that sun keeps shining all weekend for all those easter egg hunts you have planned. Im not sure what our plans are (except the mexican night) it depends if this glorious sunshines here to stay. Maybe a trip to Cambridge for a picnic by the river & a spot of punting (ooh glass of pimms anyone?). It will be nice to have a few days off to relax as my head has been spinning with so many things going on lately. I have several new tile ranges arriving in the showroom & have now chosen my new bathroom display. I have also been looking into some new lines of homeware accessories I am considering taking on. So if you are looking for somewhere to sell your homeware products whether its vintage aprons, artwork or cushions please feel free to contact me on sarah@finishingtouchinteriors.co.uk to discuss things further, I would love to hear from you. I also have the BIG move to start worrying about & a florist course all happening in May. I am doing the course with my friend Jo as part of some wedding styling/table scaping we are getting involved with. I also have two furniture revivals in the pipe line. I have already started sanding down a beautiful dresser that needs a bit of a makeover.....my head is hurting just thinking about all these projects. Am I crazy, quite possibly but Ive never been the kind of girl to just sit on my booty!!!!
Ok so my poor head needs a rest so I will be disapearing from blogland for a couple of days to enjoy some well earned time off & to catch that wonderful sunshine. Ive rattled on enough about me so Ill leave you now with just a small selection of Easter themed images, see you again on tuesday.

Tequilla Time!

Mexican cocktails
I am throwing a mexican evening on friday with a group of friends its a bit of a leaving do in my house before the big move next month. I thought it would be nice idea to have a bit of a party theme for our dinner party to mark this fond farewell. I love mexican food & Im rather partial to the cocktails as well so thought it would be a fun theme to go with.  Im cooking a mexican chicken ring as well as the usual chilli con carne & rice dishes. I have a few games lined up but I am open to any suggestions anyone has & I am in search of a pinyata (it wouldnt be a mexican party without one would it). There will be plenty of fruit too (not just for the cocktails either, we have to keep up with our 5 a day after all).  I spied this wonderful display idea over on Adaanddarcy recently & I thought I would give it a whirl. It will be a fun addition to the table dont you think? With the sun now shining as well I am certainly in the spirit of things. I would love to hear about what you are all up to & any party themes you have had recently. Any table scape shots from your parties feel free to email me & ill happily feature them here next week with a link back to your pages. Any royal wedding celebrations?

A Peek at a French Country Cottage

Today I am going to take you on a little house tour & I know that you will just love it like I do. The house (or should I say cottage) is that of the very lovely Coutney from over on frenchcountrycottage.  Her home is completely stunning she has an incredible flair for interiors down to every last detail. Courtney has a passion for French design with a mix of shabby & cottage style. Her dream is to pursue interior decorating & open a boutique & with her talent & creative eye there is no doubt in my mind this lady will be incredibly successful.
So what are you waiting for people lets take a little peek shall we.........

How gorgeous is this bedroom its dreamy isnt it. I love the bed, Ive always had a thing for four posters & this is just perfect. The creamy seashell edged quilt layered over a white bedspread covers the bed while an old red toile blanket warms your toes at the foot. The small sofa at the foot looks incredibly cosy & the chandelier is a beautiful touch, Courtney has added a few crystal strands to it for an extra  pop of bling.

This beautiful nightstand is a  french commode that was origionaly in the living room but I think Courtney made the right decision moving it to the bedroom it suits the room perfectly dont you think? Its a striking piece of furniture with  a faux marble painted top and gilded accents.
Ok now follow me through to the bathroom ( I have a passion for bathrooms being that I design them for a living) & this vintage styled one is just simply adorable. I love the furniture pieces here. Courtney has an incredible eye for stunning furniture pieces I have to say. This cabinet is so pretty especially set against the gorgeous wallpaper. Its nice to see wallpaper in the bathroom I think it makes it feel very cosy especially mixed with the tile splash back around the bath & the paneling. It all pulls together well here. I do love the vintage towel rack as well as the tin tub placed on the stall for added towel storage.
Courtney has added a second wash basin & mirror here, a great idea for a busy family who are all in & out of the bathroom in the mornings. The soft blind at the window is very elegant. I am in love with this wallpaper its beautiful.
Lets take a closer look at the dainty little nightstand thats housed between the sinks. Its the perfect place for storing makeup and lady stuff. Didnt I say the lady had some gorgeous furniture pieces. You really do need to blog hop over to take a closer look at Courtneys beautiful home. She has a fantstic blog filled with great ideas & inspiration. But dont take my word for it go see for yourselves http://frenchcountrycottage.blogspot.com/

Spring Influence's

Well Easter is only a week away believe it or not & we had a bit of a tease from the sunshine this week that seems to have disapeared once again. Seriously just as I dusted of my flip flops & maxi dresses too (big sigh of disapointment).  I had a day off yesterday to take my son Joe shopping in Bury St Edmunds for some new clothes, yes summer ones. Hes grown so much hes nearly as big as his mumma. Trust me this isnt hard being that I am only 5"2 1/2 inches tall (dont forget that important half inch either).  I thought it time to kit the boy out but I'm not sure what happened to my little boy as yesterdays shopping trip seemed to be a continued purchase of skateboard themed t.shirts with skulls & crossbones, oh my baby has grown. I also took my parents for the outing since neither of them drive. My dad gave up last year when he hit his 86 birthday. I think he lost his confidence driving after a small prang that we are not aloud to mention. This however hasnt stopped him being an awful back seat driver (yes seriously it was the longest half hour journey of my life - she says through gritted teeth). It was a lovely day out, beside the journey that is & such a shame the sun was hiding I quite fancied a walk to The Abbey Gardens to feed the ducks but the threat of rain put an end to that idea. I live in hope that the sunshine will be back especially since a picnic in clare country Park is on the agenda this afternoon. Well enough about me. Ive had a little nose across blogland & thought I would share a few spring inspired images just to cheer us all up. Beautiful pastles & brights are just the right vibe now to get us in the mood for Easter. Hope you all enjoy your weekend & keep praying for sunshine x

Mosiac Fireplace Makeover

I do love browsing blogland for ideas & great makeovers as you already know & this fireplace makeover I found over on http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/ caught my eye this week. I sell tiles in my showroom & I am a bit on the obsessive side (sad but true). I love how she has used these lovely modern mosiac tiles to update this fireplace but yet still keeping a classic feel. Teamed with the slate floor its a timeless & beautiful finish. Used for a huge array of different things mosiacs have become ever popular used in both bathrooms and kitchens but they are in general more expensive than average tiles. So if your on a budget making a feature with the mosaics like this fireplace instead of decking out a full bathroom is a great way of introducing them into your home without breaking the bank.
http://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/

Mosiac tiles give a very rustic feel as a splash back in a country style kitchen. So if tiling the whole area is just too expensive how about a feature behind the cooker or sink. These mosiacs below certainly add some charm & character.
In a bathroom you can try mixing mosiacs with other tiles to keep the budget affordable. Use mosiacs in the shower cubical only or as a splashback at the basin & team it with plain tiles or even waterproof panels.
Below shows a very indulgent use of mosiacs by Designer Jay Jeffers with glass tiles" from Waterworks covering the entire floor and the wall behind a pair of Waterworks sinks. A bit over the top for most of our budgets but still a clever design.

Pop over to my facebook page (click the badge on the right hand side of the page) for updates on new tile collections at my Finishing touch Interiors showroom.

Interview with Jan Cavelle

Jan Cavelle
I am incredibly excited to share this interview with you today. Jan Cavelle is an extremely busy lady so I am totally grateful that she has given me some of her precious time to take part in this interview. I blogged about the Jan Cavelle Furniture company some time ago but felt Id like to know a little more about this super women. As I shared with you once before Jan was a single mum when she started her company which is a very brave step, you have to admire her gutts. The business is now a huge success & Jan herself has countless awards under her belt. I have a lot of admiration for this savvy lady. (oh & her company just happens to design & make the most amazing furniture, I swooned my way through her brochure. Check out her website for a sneaky peek)

Photo source care of Oakeve Interiors
Firstly welcome Jan & thank you very much for kindly taking part in this interview.....

1. Where did it all begin for the Jan Cavelle furniture company, you were a single mum when you started out how did you manage it all & become so successful?
The truthful answer to that has always to be out of desperation for financial survival combine with a certain amount of bloody mindedness
2. What inspires you for your furniture pieces & what process do you use in creating them?
Designs tend to be evolutionary – re-thinks and spin offs from previous lines which suddenly seem to look so much better, just as in the same way broad design themes and trends can be traced back hundreds of years.  We make a lot of specials for people all the time too so I guess we also soak up current ways things are going, stuff that is being asked for.   I work very closely with my department heads doing the brainstorming.
3. Your furniture has been used by interior designers in top hotels around the country, where can we find your work?
In private homes, embassies, hotels world wide which is pretty amazing.  Hotels wise tend to be 4 and 5* ones such as Gleneagles, Greywalls, Bovey Castle but lots of lovely boutique ones as well.
4. Where can people buy your furniture pieces?
From most interior designers but if they get stuck there is a list of suppliers on our web site.
5. You have won countless awards but what has been your proudest moment with the business?
Awards are pretty high up there especially the National Sales Decade of Excellence but on a good day when the atmosphere is right and everyone is happy and the buzz is going at work, it is pretty good just walking round thinking this is my business.
6. Which entrepreneur's influence you & which designers inspire you?
Entrepreneurs didn’t tend to be well known when I started off but I have to confess to having a soft spot for Alan Sugar – having seen him speak live, he is nothing else but sincere in his passion for British industry which goes an awful long way with me.               Designers again – difficult one to answer.  Studying furniture through the ages you get the genius of Hepplewhite or Chippendale for example – now there are dozens of very clever people but difficult to say who will actually stand the test of time.
7. What advice would you have for any women considering starting their own business?
Be very sure you are prepared to live and breathe it – it will govern your life
8. What methods do you use to promote your business & what would you recommend?
Mainly telephone sales combined with brochure – tried and tested combination if a bit old fashioned.  Brochure is expensive but telephone sales good value for high return if done well.
9. What are your plans for the future?
To double turnover but at the same time keep staff happiness and enjoyment high
.....last one for fun
10. As a hard working women you deserve a guilty purchase, whats been your reward or bonus to yourself...a designer handbag or shoes or a sporty car?
Porsche boxter – is very guilty but...

Thank you so much for your time Jan your an inspiration
